“Sons are a heritage from the Lord,
children a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are sons born in one's youth.”
We celebrated Joshua's 18th birthday last week, and Jordan gave him this bow and some arrows for a “manly” present. As we were eating Thanksgiving dinner a few days later, one of our friends turned to Joshua and said, “This is your last Thanksgiving at home in Lanzhou.” And I thought about how soon we will be launching Joshua out, like an arrow. I am so thankful for the character that God has been working deep in his heart. He has grown more in his walk with God this past year than ever before.
Joshua just mentioned to me that he started working on memorizing Colossians 1, and then handed me his Bible and asked if I wanted to check him. As he was reciting verses 1-17, the words “bearing fruit” and “growing” stood out to me. May this be a prayer for Joshua's life as he makes big decisions about college in the next few months and makes preparations to launch out--pursuing the path God has for him.
“...asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.” (Colossians 1: 9b-12)
