Melchizedek Moments

Some good friends in China, who came in May to visit us in Lanzhou, shared with us what they called Melchizedek Moments from the movie “Abraham.” Charly and I found the movie on youtube when we were at my parents and watched it with David and Daniel; we were struck by this powerful scene as well (starting at 1:51). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc-48fImgiQ

Melchizedek appears out of nowhere, just when Abram needs strengthening on his faith journey. He speaks words Abram had never heard anyone else say, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High who delivered your enemies into your hand.” As Abram realizes that Melchizedek knows the same God, a deep peace washes over him and his countenance changes.

Melchizedek understands that Abraham's victories and wealth mean nothing to him, compared with the vision God has opened to both of them, “A vision beyond our time.” After the two men have broken bread and shared a cup of wine in sweet communion together, Sarai says, “You met a man who understands you.” Abram whispers back with joy, “My good Lord sent him to me.”

It's not because Melchizedek had experienced God in exactly the same way as Abram, but because the God they knew was the same God.

Our friends encouraged us that as we transition to life in the US, they would be praying for us to have Melchizedek Moments. That God would bring people into our lives, maybe some only for a single conversation, hopefully some for longer friendships, that would strengthen us in our faith. Not because those people completely understand us and can relate to the context we've come from. Their experience of God may have been very different than ours. But because we worship the same God. The Lord Most High. Creator of heaven and earth. A God much bigger than we have ever imagined. A God of promise. Of vision. Of mystery.

We can share sweet communion together because we worship the same God. And be strengthened in our faith.
